What are rollover requirements?

If you've explored casino bonuses, you will have heard of rollover requirements, wagering requirements, and playthrough requirements. They all mean the same thing: how much wagering is needed to make your bonus, or any winnings associated with it, withdrawable.

Rollover requirements are nobody’s idea of fun, but they are a central part of claiming bonuses. They impact how much the bonus is ultimately worth, and it’s important that players get to grips with and fully understand them.

Rollover requirements capped at 10x

In January 2026 the UK Gambling Commission introduced a cap of 10x on rollover requirements.

Calculating rollover requirements

Rollover requirements take the form of a multiple – now capped at10x. For bonus credit, these apply to the bonus value. For free spins, they apply to the winnings. Conceivably some casinos may impose a requirement lower than this at 6x or 4x, but these will be rare.

For example, if you receive 200 free spins with 10x wagering, and your spins yield £100, you need to keep wagering those winnings until a total of £1,000 (10 x £100) has been wagered. Only then can you cash out whatever’s left.

Different types of rollover requirements

Any type of bonus can have rollover requirements, and these work in one of two different ways.

If it consists of bonus funds, such as a £10 bonus, the rollover requirements apply to the value of that sum. For instance, 10x wagering on a £10 bonus means that you need to wager £100 (10 x £10) altogether.

However, in the case of free spins, it’s based on the winnings. If you received 100 free spins with 10x wagering and won £50, you’d need to wager through a total of £500 (10 x £50).

How to beat rollover requirements

There are certain strategies that players can consider to give themselves the best chance of beating their rollover requirements:

  • Understand the T&Cs: You don’t want any surprises so read these in detail before you claim a bonus, and ensure that you fully understand them.
  • Play 100% contribution games: .
  • Prioritise : A game with an RTP of 96%+ is desirable when wagering.
  • Take your time: It’s better to play a lower volatility game, chipping away at the requirements.

Common terms & conditions

Players should also take note of the following T&Cs related to rollover requirements:

  • Game contributions: Some games contribute to rollover requirements more than others.
  • Maximum bet limit: These are the most you can stake in one go. The free spin equivalent is the per-spin value.
  • Maximum win cap: A win cap limits how much you can win from a bonus.
  • Expiry dates: Keep a close eye on expiry dates – bonuses need to be used and requirements met before the expiry date.
  • Sticky vs. non-sticky: A sticky bonus is deducted from your withdrawal once rollover requirements are met. A non-sticky bonus is withdrawable.

Summary

Rollover requirements, wagering requirements and playthrough requirements are the same thing – they are a mechanism designed to prevent players abusing a bonus. But it’s possible to find great wager-free bonuses, or players can use certain strategies to their advantage.
